Among the different reasons why we love MacOS, the boot and shutdown speed ranks very high. The performance only rivals its superior speed.
At times, you may have noticed the shutdown process takes slightly longer. It is usually done within seconds, but if you experience a severe lag, follow the methods below.
This help will speed up the shutdown process.
Reopen Windows
When turning off their Mac, users know that there’s a dialog box that contains an option to reopen Windows when they log back in.
This feature is handy now, especially when you want to pick from yesterday’s work.
But it also means that the operating system (OS) has to store your sessions on the hard drive.
This process consumes time and delays the shutdown process. Therefore, you have to ensure that the box is unchecked during a shutdown.
Print Tasks
Incomplete print jobs stick around and don’t allow the Mac to turn off. If you use a printer, the chances are that one print job might be the cause of the trouble.
So open the Apple Menu and access Printers and Scanners within System Preferences.
Select your printer, and you will see the Open Print Queue. Delete the tasks that are open.
Close Apps
Opening too many unused apps is akin to cramming the memory of the device. It also slows down the performance if you are using an older version.
While some apps may shut down, some will linger and delay the shutting process. You can exit it manually by pressing the following shortcut keys: CMD + Q or CMD + Option + Esc to select apps and force them to quit.
Hard Disk Space
A nearly full or a full hard disk causes issues for every computer. The apps need enough space to store temporary data, as does the operating system (OS).
So you have to free up space on the disk by clearing out software or data you don’t need and then shutting down the computer. This will improve the state of the computer.
Disk Health
A disk in good health outperforms one that is bad. So, that may be a no-brainer, but most of us don’t pay proper attention to this simple issue. Open the Disk Utility; this is a built-in app. Then select the drive and click on First Aid.
Continue until the disk begins to get scanned. Any errors will be spotted and fixed.
Clear Cache
Caches are required for Mac to access certain apps and functions. There are two ways you can clear caches.
The Kernel Caches are used by Mac to boot the computer quickly. So clearing this timely evens outperformance and improves the shutdown time.
Hold the Shift key and the power button while turning on your system. This boots the Mac in safe mode. Make sure you keep holding it until you see the login window.
Delete caches from the apps by opening Spotlight and typing
~/Library/Caches
Clear the contents of each subfolder instead of deleting the folders itself.
NVRAM/PRAM
NVRAM/PRAM and SMC are two separate attributes of Mac while controlling core functions. To reset them, press CMD + Option + P + R all at the same time.
Hold these until you see the logo appear and disappear. Resetting them improves both the bootup and shutdown speeds.
